The Many Faces of Gold

Gold’s reputation for being a safe store of wealth and its long documented role as a powerful global currency has lead it to be considered one of the most valuable assets of today.
However interestingly, gold has other functions beyond currency. In fact, gold is considered one of the most useful precious metals mined from the earth.
Research indicates that the first known transaction using gold occurred over 6000 year ago. However, today you are equally as likely to be carrying gold in your mobile phone or computer or as a filling or crown in your teeth as you are, wearing it around your neck.
Gold conducts electricity, can be hammered into sheets, melted and cast into various shapes, it doesn’t tarnish and can be drawn into wire 60 miles long per ounce.  Gold is sometimes used in electronics, including computers and mobile phones, which is why these objects are highly sought after when it comes to recycling.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, certain forms of gold can also be used in modern medicine, either taken orally or by injection to treat cases of arthritis and tuberculosis. Gold can also be used to treat certain eye conditions and in the treatment of cancer. In some eastern cultures gold leaf, flakes and dust are eaten for supposed health benefits. We all have around 0.2 milligrams of gold in our bodies. Gold is also used in dentistry for fillings and crowns and the use of this precious metal in dentistry is once again on the rise.
Gold, has of course been used in jewellery for thousands of years. Pure gold is too soft to stand up to the stresses applied to many jewellery items so often craftsmen mix gold with other metals like copper, silver and platinum to increase its durability.
Gold is, however, so rare that the world pours more steel in an hour than it has poured gold since the beginning of recorded history and hence it’s very precious and used conservatively in manufacturing.
